Become a Friend of PFBC
The ‘Friends of PFBC’ has been established to support the aims, goals and objectives of Poole Flying Boats Celebration which as a UK Charity (No. 1123274) is a not-for-profit organisation.
The PFBC Trustees believe that this will bring together people within locality, and from around the UK and further afield, who are interested in the history of Flying Boats & Seaplanes, and their relationship to the Poole & Bournemouth area.
What tasks do Friends of PFBC undertake, and what benefits do Friends receive?
- Friends of PFBC is founded to support the work of the Charity through various tasks.
- Friends get involved with the work of PFBC and the promotion of its wide range of activities – from the collecting of Memories of those who were involved with Flying Boats and Seaplanes, through to contact with Colleges and Schools.
- Friends are able to attend PFBC’s many Celebrations and various other Events, also enjoy their own Meetings & Socials, as well as an Annual get-together.
- Friends receive a Friends Newsletter on a regular basis – at least 3 times a year (along with three Newsletters from the Trustees) which detail PFBC projects and list meetings. Newsletters also carry historical articles and photographs of Poole, the Flying Boats & Seaplanes, and related activities.

The relationship that the local area enjoys with Flying Boats & Seaplanes spans a time as far back as 1912 with the arrival in Bournemouth of the famous French aviator Henri Farman with his hydro-aeroplane for a meeting, and the Schneider Trophy races of 1919, right through to the last Flying Boat remnants which were dismantled at Hamworthy in 1959.
Their history here involves the relocation to Poole Harbour in WW2 of the Flying Boat Fleet of Imperial Airways and the subsequent formation and operation of BOAC throughout the war years into the postwar era.
Also, the Seaplanes of Fleet Air Arm as HMS Daedalus II stationed at RNAS Sandbanks from 1940, and in 1942 the formation of RAF Hamworthy .
PFBC aims to:
- Progress our public-access Archive so that it becomes a comprehensive collection of important information
- Reach out to those families which were involved in this fascinating period during Poole’s rich history
- Identify, and share experiences with those who remember this significant part that Poole played
- Place Poole as a Flying Boat Hub within a worldwide perspective so that links can be formed accordingly
- Develop reciprocal arrangements with other charities /organisations involved with the History of Poole; with the History of Flying Boats both civil & military and Seaplanes; with Social & Transport History of this era relevant to PFBC Archives; and in promoting Tourism locally!
- Engage with others through PFBC’s wide range of displays, presentations, materials as an educational resource, forum and website, press releases, articles, publications, and other items
- Arrange and promote Celebrations which are meaningful to PFBC’s aims, goals and objectives, which are intrinsic to our charitable remit.
